bio:cap is the international investival for innovators and investors in life sciences and AI, where bold ideas meet capital, industry, and policy. "ETHICS FIRST: Who Decides What's Right in Biomedical AI?"

Yves Moreau, our 2023 Individual Award winner and ambassador for ethical research practices, joined Dr. Christoph Poetsch, Head of AI Quality & Ethics at TÜV AI.lab and Eric Sutherland, Senior Health Economist at OECD to explore how to advance responsible AI in biomedical research with the highest ethical standards. He explained: safeguards only work when all stakeholders truly understand their necessity and commit to shared responsibility. Guidelines are a start. Genuine collective awareness is the goal.
MAX SPRANG – Early Career Award Winner 2025
"GenBench: A European Safe-by-Design Genomics Foundation Model Initiative"

Max Sprang, recipient of the 2025 Early Career Award for his project “Erring Rigorously” which aims to explore how experimental errors shape genomic data, developing tools to make analyses more accurate and reproducible, shared insights on the promises & risks of generative AI in genomics. Generative AI can now design viable genomes, but only 3.2% of biological AI models ship with any safeguards, and Europe has no dedicated safe-by-design GFM initiative. This talk introduced GenBench: a reference European genomics foundation model coupled to a reproducible biorisk benchmark and a risk detection and mitigation framework. In Genomics, the methods needed to increase safety of these models also help with understanding Biology.
